...A spacey Discovery from deep Tunisia...

"Tunseya" is an ambient project that took its starting point in the exhibition Tunseya organized by the collector and designer Fares Cheraït. The exhibition highlights women’s clothing and accessories from different regions and different eras related to Tunisia. Some dresses and accessories date back two centuries. Cali Kula was responsible for designing a soundtrack to accompany the exhibition. The Mooja Gallery is an entirely black building from floor to ceiling, which gives the impression that the exposed clothes float in space.

Through analog synthesizer strings, Cali Kula explored sounds of Tunisian musical heritage, from different regions, with authentic instruments, but also voices, some anonymous, others of singers of the 1920s, like Hbiba Msika and Louisa Tunsiya. Sounds recovered on old cassettes and old vinyl convent Tunisia from north to south, like the Zoukra of Zarzis, a kind of Berber bagpipes of North Africa, the authentic songs of El Kef, northern Tunisia, the heritage of Djerid with its particular flute, but also the songs and its more urban, those of Tunis at the beginning of the twentieth century.

It is this idea that was the starting point of the soundtrack: Tunisia in Space, music could only be ambient. The result sounds like key contributions on the classic FAX label like Sultan, Psychonavigation or the Outland series. Also, Bill Laswell's tribal ambient and Axiom project ahs been cited.
